Raul Midon/World Within A World

Raul Midon
A World Within A World
(EMI) 2007

With jaw-dropping, show-stopping talent, Raul Midon is a one-man virtuoso performer of soulful vocals, slap-attack guitar rhythms, flamenco-style runs and a mean mouth-trumpet all while self-harmonizing over his distinctly original songs.

On his new album A World Within A World, Midon writes songs full of insight, soul, and most importantly love.  The New Mexico-born, New York based writer's 2005 debut album, State of Mind, proved that he had both the musical capacity and the drive to change the stagnant pop scene.  midon, blind from birth, delves into the world of imagination in each of his albums, proving that pop music needs to experience a change from within before it can undergo an exterior change.  Citing influences like Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Bill Withers and having worked with the likes of Julio Iglesias, Shakira and Louie Vega's Elements of Life, Midon has reached an imitable level of success where he has much more freedom in his work today.  A World Within A World is a perfect example of what happens when a grand master is allowed to produce music without constraints; it allows a gem to be  created.

A World Within A World opens with "Pick Somebody Up," a bold statement of Raul Midon's attitude to music: it isn't about revolution, it's about finding the little people and letting their attitudes change.  The song is not only soulful but it's also got a sly electronic drumbeat that really helps 'pick somebody up.'  "Save My Life." is a tribute to the 70's pop music that Midon takes his inspiration from that leaves behind the computer-generated beats of today and keeps it solid with a tight guitar line, while "All The Answers" is a celebration of the modern convenience of Google and the information age.  Working with mulit-instrumentalists Joe Mardin, son of legendary producer Arif Mardin, A World Within A World doesn't take the easy road and remain with the great music of the past.  It is a mix and meld of tributes to  the 70's  and today that is a true celebration of all the things that pop music can do when it is just put to the test.
